My life is a neverending struggle. I raise my children on my own. My older son is afflicted by an incurable disease and needs 24/7 care. I am unable to go back to work. I can’t leave my son at home. We barely make ends meet. I had situations where I was unable to pay my water bill. I had to request payment deferrals. I am a conscientious person – to me, bread, bills, and food for my children are sacred. Ever since I found myself alone with my children, I had to tighten my belt quite a bit, so that we could afford this humbler existence. My health permitting, I try my best to perform some odd jobs. When I came back home with food from the Food Bank, I burst into tears. That was such a great help to me. I’ve never expected to receive this much good. I am extremely grateful and happy that I got it and that I will have something to prepare food for my family.

For my whole life, I’ve been a rather active man. I worked very hard. I lived in the here and now. All of a sudden, though, everything changed when I found myself stricken by illness. I suffer from cardiac insufficiency. And other diseases, too. Despite having worked for so many years, I do not have a retirement or disability pension. The money I’d earned ran out. It’s only my wife who has a job now. Due to her ailing spine, though, she’s only able to work half-time. But even this is beyond her strength. We live off her salary. My wife is from Ukraine. She's got her family there. Now, with the war that has unfolded there, she is extremely worried about all of them. I’ve got gas heating, but I don’t use it, because I can't afford to pay the bills. I collect wood to burn in my oven, so I can have hot water. Good thing I receive food aid. It’s of great help to me. At the very least, we don’t have to worry about food. “My wife and I are able to get by, somehow”
